Dr. Dana Price Dental – What Is a Bridge and How Can It Help My Smile?

A dental bridge is a great alternative to implants that can fill in your smile without putting you through a form of oral surgery. Rather than having a tooth permanently inserted into your gums, you can get a bridge that covers a gap without any invasion. Bridges are not fit for every situation, but they might be perfect for you. Read on to learn more about how bridges work.

What Is a Bridge?

A dental bridge is a way to fill gaps in a smile due to missing teeth. A crown is placed on the two teeth surrounding the gap, and then a fake tooth is inserted in between the crowns. The bridge will cover three teeth in total, but it can be attached to both natural teeth and implants.

Benefits of Bridges

Bridges provide an alternative to dental implants that is less invasive and still aesthetically pleasing. If you are worried about gaps in your smile but do not have the money or desire to cover the cost of an implant, a bridge could be a great option to keep in mind. You will still get permanent coverage for the gap, but you won't have to worry about having anything drilled into your gums.

Bridges are also great for patients who have missing teeth but do not necessarily want to get dentures for their issues. You may only need one tooth replaced, rather than a full set of them. You might as well preserve what you have and only get what you need.

Drawbacks to Bridges

Despite all of the benefits to bridges, there are some drawbacks to keep in mind. In order to place the crown on the two teeth adjacent to the gap, those teeth have to be shaved down. This could create an area for bacteria to build up, which could lead to plaque and decay over time. You will need to take good care of your teeth at all times to prevent bad breath and other issues from developing.

Bridges will not work for everyone. If the teeth near your gap are not strong enough to support your crowns, you will need to consider another way to fill in your gap. If you come in for a dental consultation, we can determine if a bridge is right for you. Then you can get your smile looking its best.

Cosmetic dentistry covers a wide range of options, from implants to bleaching to porcelain veneers. The type of procedure you need will depend on the current state of your teeth. If you have healthy teeth that you simply want to brighten, a basic bleaching procedure may be perfect for you. If your teeth are cramped, misshapen, chipped, or missing entirely, you may be better off with implants, veneers, partial dentures, or a similarly in-depth procedure.
